The Kansas Department of Health and Environment received a Brownfields application from Ottawa University. They are requesting a Phase I Brownfield Targeted and NESHAP Assessment to be completed on a property located at the1001 S. Cendar in Ottawa, Kansas. The property is approximately 33.2 acres in size and is currently being used as a non-profit college. The goal of the project is to renovate the propery for continued use as a school. The application has been approved. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) completed a Phase I Brownfields Targeted Assessment (BTA) at the above referenced property in Ottawa, Kansas. Based on the Phase I report, no Recognized Environmental Conditions (RECs) were identified at the property. No further investigation is needed through the Brownfields Program and the property is cleared for redevelopment. Business Environmental Risks (BERs) were found during a NESHAP Limited Asbestos, Lead-Based Paint (LBP), and Mold Survey. Based on the information collected during the survey, asbestos containing materials (ACMs) were identified as 100 square feet of 12 x 12 tan floor tile (4% chrysotile) and 300 square feet of 12 x 12 brown floor tile (4% chrysotile) at the Administration Building; 28,000 square feet of ceiling texture (5% chrysotile), 600 square feet of 9 x 9 white floor tile (3% chrysotile), 300 square feet of 9x 9 tan floor tile (5% chrysotile), 10 Thermal System Insulation (TSI) Joints (Presumed Asbestos Containing Material [PACM]), 100 linear feet of TSI boiler wrap (PACM), and 1000 square feet of transite panels (PACM) at Brown Hall. Lead-Based Paint was identified as 20,000 square feet of cream painted plaster (8,120 mg/kg2) and 100 square feet of white painted wood (201,000 mg/kg2) at the Administration Building; and 100 square feet of white painted wood (186,000 mg/kg2) at Ward Science Hall. Abatement of the ACM will likely be required prior to renovation.
