Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The property is located in a primarily residential and commercial area of Hopkinton, Iowa, and consist of approximately a 4,480 square foot, two story commercial building situated on approximately 0.10 acres of land. The structure located on the property was originally constructed circa 1866. The building had numerous uses over the years as a commercial property, town hall, opera house, feed warehouse, and retail and residential use. In 2017 the building became vacant and the structure exterior wall began to fall apart. The city of Hopkinton acquired the property 2018. Initial environmental assessment suggested further sampling and analysis be completed as there may be potential contaminants on the property. Follow up assessment found asbestos in the building under amount was under state standards. Therefore no further action is necessary. No other environmental concern was found. The City was awarded a Derelict Building Grant. Demolition of the building was completed July 2020. Over 92% of the material was diverted from landfills. The site will be prepared for reuse/redevelopment possibly as a pocket park. As of July 2020 redevelopment plans have not been finalized. A white privacy fence has been placed on the property and the city is waiting to complete the development of a park until it receives additional funding.
