Property Highlights

Former Use: Standard and other historical sources (including historical news articles) were able to document that the property was developed in 1878 with the construction of the Eastern Michigan Asylum, a psychiatric hospital, in the western portion. In 1911, the hospital changed its name to Pontiac State Hospital. By at least 1940, agricultural fields were present in the northern and eastern portions. The agricultural fields in the eastern portion were utilized as occupational work therapy associated with the psychiatric hospital and contained two buildings (a greenhouse and sewer interceptor). In the 1940s and 1950s, the psychiatric hospital campus footprint expanded with the construction of several new buildings and additions to existing buildings in the western portion. Agricultural activities ceased in the northern portion in the early 1960s, and in 1973 the hospital was renamed the Clinton Valley Center. Several administrative and/or residential hospital buildings were demolished in the early to mid-1970s, and agricultural activates in the eastern portion (including the demolition of the greenhouse and sewer interceptor building) ceased by 1990. The hospital closed in 1997 and was demolished in the late 1990s/early 2000s. Between 2002 and 2005, the property was cleared and has existed as vacant land since that time with occasional construction equipment temporarily stored on the property.
