Additional Property Attributes

The current building was constructed in 1903 and was used by the Salvation Army as a barracks. A gymnasium was added to the west end of the building in 1927 and the Salvation Army continued to use the property until the mid-1960s.

Former Use: The subject property was residential land in 1887 and by 1892 one of the dwellings had been converted to a boardinghouse and saloon, and a small undertakers building had been built between the dwellings. The boardinghouse then became known as Briggs House. The current building was constructed in 1903 and was used by the Salvation Army as a barracks. A gymnasium was added to the west end of the building in 1927 and the Salvation Army continued to use the property until the mid-1960s. During that time the Briggs House building was home to several stores and later became the Huron Hotel. The hotel was demolished between 1992 and 1995 while the main building continued to be used as office space until the water main broke inside the building in January 2014. The building has been vacant since that time.
