Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: Standard and other historical sources document the northern and central portions of the subject property were originally developed prior to 1888 with dwellings, a drugstore (later converted to a dwelling), and associated storage and stable structures. The dwellings in the northern and central portions were converted for commercial use between 1898 and 1915, and were occupied by a sewing operation, barber, dressmaker, grocer, bakery, and tailor. An additional building was constructed in the eastern-central portion between 1898 and 1903, occupied by a blacksmith, warehouse, or monuments between at least 1903 and 1915, and an automotive repair operation in at least 1919. All structures in the northern and central portions were demolished between 1919 and 1924, and the current building, which originally contained multiple tenant spaces, was constructed. The building was converted into a department store between 1940 and 1950 and an eastern addition was constructed, which was later demolished between 1983 and 1987. The building was generally occupied by retail storefronts and offices, with the exception of laundries and dry cleaners at 94 North Saginaw Street between at least 1925 and 1930 and a hat cleaners at 100 North Saginaw Street between at least 1930 and 1935. The southern portion of the subject property was developed prior to 1888 with an office building in the southwestern portion and commercial building, occupied by pop works in the southeastern portion. Various additions were completed on the former office building between 1888 and 1909, eventually connecting to the commercial building in the southeastern portion, and the building was generally occupied by a grocer, plumber, carpet cleaner, millinery, and retail storefronts. Additionally, Pontiac Steam Laundry occupied 84 North Saginaw Street between at least 1892 and 1920 and 88 North Saginaw Street between at least 1925 and 1930, and operations associated with Pontiac Steam Laundry may have included dry cleaning. The building was then occupied by various retail storefronts and offices until a fire destroyed the building in the early-1980s and the building was demolished. The southern portion has been utilized for parking since 1983.
