Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: Standard and other historical sources were able to document that the property was developed with the northeastern portion of the current school building and the current boiler room, as a separate building, with a connecting tunnel in 1929. A southern school building, which is currently the southern portion of the current building, was constructed in 1948-1949. Cafeteria, kitchen and gymnasium additions were constructed on the western portion of the northern building between 1952 and 1957, and a southern addition to the southern building was completed in 1954. A central addition was constructed between 1961 and 1966, which connected both school buildings and the boiler room, creating the current layout. The northern building was originally Whittier Elementary School, which became Jefferson Junior High, when the elementary school relocated to the southern building following initial construction. A modular classroom was present in the southern-central portion between at least 1972 and 1983. The remainder of the property has consisted of parking lot, athletic fields, and mowed grass and landscaped areas since at least 1929. The property was occupied by Whittier Elementary and Jefferson Junior High from 1929 until at least 1978 and by the Pontiac Board of Education likely as offices between at least 1983 and 2013 when the building was vacated. The property has remained vacant of occupants since 2013.
