Additional Property Attributes

The Subject Property consists of an approximately 53.27-acre parcel identified as Block 260, Lot 2.01 according to the current Maurice River Township tax maps. The Subject Property is located within an area of mixed land use (residential and wooded land) and is not improved with any buildings or structures except for an access gate located near NJ-47. Initially, 5-acres was leased by the Township for use as a sanitary landfill; however, landfill operations expanded to an unknown area.
The Subject Property was initially developed sometime prior to 1931 and had formerly been used a sand and gravel mine. By at least July 1970, the mining activities had ceased, and it was leased to Maurice River Township to be used as a sanitary landfill (Maurice River Township Sanitary Landfill #1). Wastes accepted included municipal, bulky, vegetative, animal processing, food processing and non-chemical industrial wastes. The landfill ceased operations in October 1987. The Township purchased the Subject Property in 2004. Based on information provided by the Township, the final cover is native soil excavated from on-site, but the landfill is not lined or capped.
The Subject Property is generally wooded, and dirt roads and paths allow entry to the site's interior. A metal gate controls access from NJ-47. No buildings or other structures exist on the Subject Property. Although the landfill area was heavily vegetated, Nobis observed refuse protruding from the ground in the landfill area, along the access roads, and in the voids created by toppled, uprooted trees. Nobis observed numerous brush piles along the main and upper access roads leading to the landfill area and several large areas of ponded water and roadside dumping along Hunters Mill Road. Nobis identified three groundwater monitoring wells - two are viable and one is destroyed.
