Additional Property Attributes

In the early 1900s the property was used for coal processing, and coke ovens were located on the property. Houses were also located on the property, presumably used by miners working in the nearby mines and in coal production. The remaining houses were demolished in the 1970s. The land is partially leased to EC Source and used for industrial storage and operations. The remainder of the land is heavily vegetated. The property was used for coal processing in the early 1900s, and historic resources depict coke ovens on the property.
The City of Smithers is interested in developing the property. This property is the only large, one-owner, undeveloped tract of land in the Upper Kanawha Valley and within the Smithers city limits. here. The property is an integral part of redevelopment for the city and region (from Charleston to Gauley Bridge) to transition into an outdoor recreation and tourist hub as the western gateway to the newly designated New River Gorge National Park. City plans include providing amenities to recreationists traveling to and from the New River Gorge National Park, the Hatfield-McCoy Trail system, and the Mammoth Preserve property with integrated blue and green trails
