Addl Cleanup/Treatment info: A hazardous lead contaminated soil area of approximately 25 feet by 20 feet by 6 feet in depth surrounding former soil boring B-10 was excavated, loaded into trucks and transported under manifest control to a licensed disposal facility. In addition, a nonhazardous lead contamination area approximately 60 feet by 80 feet by 6 feet in depth surrounded the hazardous lead contaminated area near boring B-10 and was also excavated with offsite disposal as nonhazardous soil. In review, remediation included the removal and offsite disposal of approximately189.93 tons of hazardous lead contaminated soil, and 1,308.25 tons of nonhazardous lead contaminated soil.

Additional Property Attributes

The Site was initially developed for use prior to 1885 with a school and the South Bend Stone and Pipe manufacturer on the northern half of western parcel where the school operated until approximately 1917. The stone and pipe manufacturer were gone by 1899. The remaining portions of the Site were developed with residences until approximately 1917 when the Studebaker Corporation Automotive Sales and Service began operating on the southern half of the western parcel. By 1949, the school building had been demolished and was replaced with a parking lot on the western parcel and the residences on the southern half of the eastern parcel had been demolished and were replaced with an automotive garage and parking lot. Scherman Schaus Freeman Auto and/or Parking operated as an automotive service garage in the former Studebaker building between 1944 and 1960 and operated the parking lots and surrounding portions of the Site from 1960 until 1979 later becoming Freeman Spicer Co. Autos. The Old Studebaker Museum began operations in the Freeman Spicer building in 1992 until 2005 when it moved to its current
