Additional Property Attributes

The former high school is an approximately 25,000 square foot building and operated from 1911 to 1984. 10 years after the school closed, community interest caused the City to acquire the property for reuse, rather than allow demolition. The City has renovated the newest portions of the school for use as a police station and municipal court in the east wing and gym and cafeteria in the west wing. The central 3 story building has not been rehabilitated. The Mid-America Regional Council has applied for a Brownfields Assessment on behalf of the City to allow the City to redevelop the property as municipal office space.

No recognized environmental conditions were noted in the Phase I Environmental Site Assessment. The Phase I did note that there was a possibility of asbestos (ACM), lead-based paint (LBP), and light ballasts containing polychlorinated biphenyls being in the building. An ACM and LBP inspection was conducted, and both were positively identified in the building.
