Additional Property Attributes

An asbestos bulk sampling event was performed for a two-story wooden structure located at 1592-1594 US Highway 158 in Macon, North Carolina (the "Subject Property"). According to interview information the two story structure was formerly a general store and residence. The Town of Macon repeatedly attempted to contact the current property owners (heirs of a previous owner) with no response. Due to the condemned status of the building, Mid-Atlantic was unable to safely access the interior or roof to identify potential asbestos-containing materials (ACM) during this assessment. Therefore, and per our phone call discussion with Mr. Jeff Dellinger of the Health Hazards Control Unit (HHCU), it was determined that Mid-Atlantic would conduct asbestos bulk sampling of the structure during demolition activities.

On March 1, 2023, Mid-Atlantic mobilized to the Subject Property to visually inspect/bulk sample accessible suspect ACM of an approximately 3,600 square foot two-story wooden structure. The building consisted of a wood frame construction with a sloped metal roof and included interior finishes consisting of wood floors and ceilings with limited areas of wallboard walls. During this visit, Mr. Colton Gotshall (North Carolina Asbestos Building Inspector Accreditation No. 13317), collected bulk samples of window glazing and wallboard that were accessible without entering the dilapidated structure. These samples were then submitted under chain of custody to Eurofins CEI (ECEI) laboratory in Cary, North Carolina for analysis by Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) with dispersion staining techniques per EPA methodology (40 CFR 763, Subpart F). On July 17, 2023, Mr. Brandon Davis, an employee for American Hauling & Excavating, Inc., utilized an excavator to demolish the wooden structure while a Town of Macon firefighter dosed the building with water. During demolition activities, a black/silver paint coating was observed on the metal roof of the structure. Mid-Atlantic sampled the paint coating and submitted the samples under chain of custody to ECEI for analysis. The metal roof associated with the paint coating was then isolated from other construction and demolition debris (C&D). Laboratory analytical results did not identify asbestos in the window glazing or wallboard bulk samples collected on March 1, 2023. However, chrysotile asbestos was identified in the black/silver paint coating associated with the metal roof of the structure that was sampled on July 17, 2023. On August 2, 2023, the metal roof was placed into a lined roll-off box and transported to Republic Services Upper Piedmont Environmental Landfill in Rougemont, North Carolina for disposal. Future use has not been determined at this time.
