Additional Property Attributes

The property comprises a portion of a formerly larger property which has been used for industrial purposes since circa 1860. Between 1860 and 1927, this larger industrial property was used for the manufacture of wooden and cotton cloth. Between circa 1927 and 1946, the larger property was occupied by a variety of small businesses, including a stable and possibly, a Ford automobile dealership. Since 1946, the portion of the former industrial property which compromises the subject site has been used for the manufacture of wallcoverings (QR 7, 04/01/06 - 06/30/06) Site not acted on due to ownership and lack of access to the site.

Former Use: The Site consists of an approximate 1.2-acre, rectangular-shaped parcel of land, located at 2A Grove Street in Adams, Massachusetts. The Site is developed with one three-story stone building, which was constructed in 1860 as part of a larger mill complex. The mill complex was used until 1927 for the manufacturing of woolen cloth. According to previous environmental reports, a larger building associated with the manufacturing process was present to the southwest of the existing building. This larger building consisted of a machine shop, engine house, boiler room, and cotton storage areas. A coal-fired power plant is believed to have operated in the southwestern portion of this building, and parts of the building may have caught fire in the past. It is believed that the foundation of this former building had been filled with demolition debris after the building had been razed. The other buildings associated with the mill complex have been demolished. A concrete foundation slab associated with an addition formerly constructed adjacent to the rear of the current Site building remains. The Site was vacated around 2000 and remains vacant with no occupants. The first floor of the Site building is currently used to store various lawn-maintenance equipment.
