Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: SIte is approx. 1.75 mi. southeast of Deming at an elevation of approx. 240 ft. above seal level. It is accessed by following Hwy. 542 south from Deming to the Hwy. 9 cutoff, then south approx. 1.2 mi. to the entrance road. The site has been in use. The Site is primarily forested land w/ a few dirt roads and cleared areas for temporary storage of items awaiting purchase by other recycling facilities. A mobile home on-sitehas been the residence for facility caretakers since 1995. Water for the caretakers is obtained from the on-site well. Foothills recycled vehicles and construction, demolition, and land-clearing debris on the central and eastern side of the property. Neighboring properties include residences, a trucking company, and forested land. The property is currently owned by Robert McKay, a Nooksack Indian Tribal member. Mr. McKay stated that the 50-ac. Site and an additional 140 ac. were homesteaded by his grandmother. All 190 ac. are Indian Trust land. Mr. McKay began storing vehicles for salvage on the property in 1972. There are no other known uses of the property prior to the incorporation of Foothills Recycling in 1984.
