Additional Property Attributes

The site is a future perfroming arts and education cultural facility and has a 501(3) status. This building is part of community development efforts to revitalize the downtown of Adams which is one of the poorest communities in the Commonwealth. The owners of the building purchased the theater and formed a non-profit organization which would steward the renovation of the theater. All of the time put into this project has been volunteer, with a volunteer executive director and artistic director an all volunteer board of directors and staff. This oil spill could be a major setback in the progress of this future arts and education facility. The three day cleanup cost the arts center $15,000 and the DEP required more testing and potentially more cleanup.

Former Use: The site was an opera house in the 1800s and after it burned down a 10,000 sq ft vaudeville movie theater was built in 1938. The building closed in 1968 and has been empty for 40 years. The condition of the building is in disrepair with most of the interior stripped down and removed. The previous owner installed oil tanks in the back utility room for heating one of the storefronts in 2003. The tanks were installed without a safety barrier and on Nov. 21,2006 a volunteer/worker accidentally stepped on the unprotected tank breaking the fuel line. 35 gallons of heating oil spilled on the ground. Within the hour Maxymillian was there and removed 3 truckloads of soil in a three day cleanup process. The cement floor, which had been broken up in order to dig, was replaced and the oil tanks were moved so that cleanup could continue where the tanks were. DEP is requiring more testing to determine if there is remaining oil and if so where the oil is located.
