Additional Property Attributes

This property is located approximately 1/2 mile south of Tralee and, according to the community, needs to be utilized. There is great potential for sustainable reuse. The use of the property and existing infrastructure in the Brownfields process will reduce environmental threats and address community need.

Former Use: The Barkers Creek Industrial Park property has been abandoned since 2000, and had been the site of a pressurized wood treatment facility from approximately 1979 to 1990, plus, for a short time afterward, utilized as a storage location for equipment and trucks associated with a solid waste collection company. A coal tipple was located at this location several years prior to 1979. The site was last used briefly in 2000 for a painting business. WCEDA purchased the site in 2011 with the intent to redevelop the brownfield as an industrial park. Currently the site contains only a small two-room office. All of the wood treatment equipment has been removed. Site activities to date include an initial Phase I Assessment and subsequent Phase II Assessment, performed in 2009. Heavy metals contaminants, with arsenic being the main contaminant present, In addition, a smaller area of petroleum-based contamination was located in the western section of the wood treatment operations area. Groundwater samples were collected during the Phase II ESA in July 2009. Further testing was conducted by the WVDEP-DLR in 2010. Finally, an updated Phase I assessment was conducted.
