Additional Property Attributes

The Indian Center is a not-for-profit community help organization that assists Native American people in the Springfield area with food, clothing, healthcare, and research of their Native American heritage. The Indian Center is in the process of renovating their building using the City's HUD funded loan program. Due to location of the property in a commercial area and next to a car lot, the City did not want to commit funds to the project until the environmental conditions were determined. Renovation of the Indian Center is close to completion, and includes a number of sustainable, energy-friendly aspects, including new insulation for the building. Asbestos is listed as unknown media impacted simply because it is in the building and there is no option available for reporting that. Since there was no demolition and the asbestos containing material was in good condition, cleanup was not required.

Former Use: The property is improved with office space and ancillary facilities owned by not-for-profit group, Southwest Missouri Indian Center. The on-site building was constructed in approximately 1960 and had two additions constructed between 1960 and 1996. It was the previous location of a chiropractic center and various restaurant businesses dating back to approximately 1961. Prior to development, the site was vacant land until at least 1935. According to city directories, the property south of the site was the location of a service station from approximately 1956 until approximately 1976.
