Additional Property Attributes

The site includes multiple parcels: block 746 lots 16-18, 24-26, 33, 45-47, 64, 68, and 73 and block 4 lots 1 and 64. These lots are owned by the City of Camden, Save Our Waterfront, and BPUM. The site is bounded by N. 3rd Street to the west, the Delaware River Back Channel to the north, N. 6th Street to the east, and Erie Street to the south. EPA Brownfield Assessment funding was used to develop a Supplemental Remedial Investigation Work Plan, to implement the Supplemental Remedial Investigation, and to develop a land use planning report including geotech, permitting, and infrastructure analyses for the site. The site is slated for development as a waterfront linear park as well as other uses that have yet to be determined. Former Use: This site is currently vacant. The site was formerly used for gelatin production as well as as shipyards, a woolen mill, and a foundry. With an industrial history dating back to the 1800s, the site had a wharf and housed various industrial uses including a wood mill, manufacturers of soap, gelatin, sealants, and other goods. Over two dozen buildings once occupied the Knox site; the last remaining buildings were razed in January 1995. The only industrial remnants visible on the vacant land are foundations left in place. The site is contaminated with historic fill, material contaminated with PAHs, lead/metals, and PCBs, that was used to backfill the waterfront when it was developed.
