Additional Property Attributes

The older portions of the former Julia Keen Elementary school building were constructed in 1953 and 1955, and an addition to the school was constructed in 1969. Ramadas were added to the property in 1990. The school closed in 2004 and was leased to World Care, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which used the facility for its recycling and reuse activities. A portion of the school site is currently leased to Flowers & Bullets, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, for urban gardening and community outreach. The property lies within the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Approach-Departure Corridor. The school building is currently in disrepair and is unoccupied.
A large portion of the school buildings caught on fire in early 2023, the week before an asbestos and lead-based paint survey was to be conducted. Due to the fire damage the City of Tucson issued a "No-Access" order. In June, 2023, most of the school buildings are being abated/demolished prior to the change in ownership planned for later in the year, likely in July 2023.
