Additional Property Attributes

he site was previously owned by Bay State Transport Company and consists of a former auto body shop at 1071 Dwight Street and a former auto repair building at 1101 Dwight Street. The Yankee Oil Company reportedly operated an oil terminal at the 1071 Dwight Street property and a former gasoline station was reportedly located at the 1101 Dwight Street property. Currently, the parcels, totaling approximately 1.6 acres, are vacant or used for parking. No buildings are present on 1071 or 1101 Dwight Street. Both properties are referred to herein as the former Yankee Oil site. Eighteen underground storage tanks USTs with a total capacity of 178,000-gallons were reportedly removed from the site between June and July 1987. Twelve of the USTs were removed from the 1101 Dwight Street property. These USTs reportedly contained gasoline and No. 2 fuel oil the contents of two of the USTs were not reported. The other six USTs were reportedly removed from the 1071 Dwight Street property. One of those tanks reportedly contained waste oil and the other five tanks reportedly contained No. 2 fuel oil. In March 2010, the City received a MassDEP Lust grant of 160,000 to clean up the site. Tighe & Bond was the consultant hired by MassDEP to do the work which consisted of two a site and target Magnesium Sulfate injections. As of September 2011, two rounds of groundwater testing have been completed.

Former Use: The subject site was previously owned by Bay State Transport Company and consisted of a former auto body shop at 1071 Dwight Street and a former auto repair building at 1101 Dwight Street. An oil terminal was also previously operated at the 1071 Dwight Street property by the Yankee Oil Company, and a former gasoline station was located at the 1101 Dwight Street property. The City took ownership of these two properties through tax title in November 2001, and both site buildings have recently been demolished. 18 USTs with a total capacity of 178,000-gallons were removed from the site between June and July 1987. These tanks reportedly contained gasoline, No. 2 fuel oil, waste oil, and other unknown contents. All suspected USTs have been removed. In July 1987, the Department of Environmental Quality Engineering DEQE issued a Notice of Responsibility to the Bay State Transport Company for leaking USTs identified during tank removals at the site and Release Tracking Number RTN RTN 1-0307 was assigned to the release incident. In June 1995, a fire occurred at a building formerly located at 106-112 Carew Street, which reportedly caused the release of 100 gallons of waste oil to the building and parking lot. DEP assigned RTN 1-10936 to that incident and hired a remedial contractor to facilitate the clean up of the release. Drums and containers of oil and hazardous materials were also suspected to have been located in the condemned building that burned in the fire, and floor drains were tentatively identified.
