Additional Property Attributes

The Former New Boston Coke Corporation was part of a large integrated steel mill that closed in 1980, accounting for a loss of over 5,000 jobs. The coke plant continued operating until 2002, when it closed resulting a loss of 250 additional jobs. The Southern Ohio Port Authority developed a Strategic Plan to redevelop the area formerly occupied by the steel plant to productive use. From 2003 through 2008, assessment and remedial activity was performed on the former steel mill area, which included the coke plant. Currently, in the western portion of the land formerly occupied by the steel mill has been redeveloped and is now occupied by a large department store, restaurants, and other commercial and retail development. The Former New Boston Coke Corporation land has been assessed using this US EPA Brownfield grant. A 2.7-acre portion of the former coke plant property has been targeted for remediation and redevelopment for use by Infra-Metals, a distributor of structural steel products nationwide. SOPA has leveraged the US EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant into a $180,369.00 Clean Ohio grant to remediate the property for this purpose. Construction on this project is scheduled for fall of 2009. A national energy company has expressed an interest in acquiring the balance of the Former New Boston Coke Corporation property for redevelopment into an inter-modal (rail and pipeline) distribution facility.

Former Use: The Property was developed for commercial and/or industrial use circa 1910. The Property lies in an industrial area developed along the northern shore of the Ohio River and related to the production of steel. A former steel mill located adjacent to and north of the Property began operation in approximately 1894 and included expansions between 1920 and 1948. The steel mill closed in 1980. The coke plant operated between approximately 1917 and 2002. The majority of the coke plant operations were located on the Property. The industrial use of the Property is verified on aerial photographs taken between 1939 and 1978. The coke plant Property was privately held until 2003, when it was transferred to the Southern Ohio Port Authority.
