Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The property is currently owned by the City of Baraboo. Veolia Environmental Services used the facility as a solid waste transfer station. Prior to acquisition, the site was used as a lumber yard and also by a recycling and waste transport and disposal firm. Sanborn Fire Insurance Company maps of the area show that the property was a lumberyard as far back as 1885. The maps indicate the former Deppe Lumber Company was present at the site as of 1913, and in addition to lumber, wood, coal, and other fuels were stored at the facility. Eight underground or aboveground petroleum storage tanks are registered at this property with the State of Wisconsin. Sanborn maps indicate at least two underground tanks were present in the vicinity of the current office area. The locations of the other tanks are currently unknown. At least six of the tanks were removed between 1985 and 1997 without a site investigation being performed. The exact locations of the former tanks are unknow. Environmental concerns regarding the Veolia site are primarily related to the historical presence of the eight petroleum storage tanks formerly located on the property. Ayres Associates found no evidence to suggest that environmental sampling and analysis was performed during the removal of the tanks. Although no evidence was found to suggest that wood treatment was performed at the former lumber companies that operated at the site, the possibility exists given the availability of waste products from the two manufactured gas plants that operated west of the site. Environmental concerns regarding the site include direct contact threats from impacted soil, off-site migration of contaminated groundwater, and the potential presence of contaminated fill material that may serve as a source of groundwater contamination.
