Additional Property Attributes

perchlorate concentrations in groundwater observed during the Phase II ESA were significantly lower than those results obtained by DPRA in December 2007 and WESTON in July 2008 indicating that the excavation of Site soils completed during October and November 2008 likely successfully removed the primary source of perchorlate contamination. In addition, the results indicate that the remaining perchlorate contamination is naturally attenuating therefore naturally remediating the remaining perchlorate contamination. In general, all future property owners and planned uses should comply with the regulations and guidance provided by the Tribe and/or WDNR to protect both human health and the environment. In addition, since the health impacts of perchlorate exposure are still mainly unknown and residual levels of perchlorate contamination were observed in both the monitoring wells and VAS borings during Phase II ESA, the Tribe and any future Site owners should consider the following: Semi-Annual sampling of all potable monitoring wells in the immediate vicinity of the Site including the Tribes Land Management Office, Haskell Lake Lodge, the bait shop, and Tower Creek restaurant.

Former Use: The Site is located at 14258 State Highway 70 West in Lac du Flambeau, Vilas County, Wisconsin. The Site is bordered to the west by County Road D, to the west-northwest by the Tribes Land Management Office, to the south by State Highway 70 West, to the southwest by a hotel and bait shop, and to the north and east by wooded areas and Tower Creek. A former restaurant is located immediately east of Tower Creek. Several ponds and/or lagoons are located near the Site, and Haskell Lake is located approximately 0.10 mile southwest of the Site across State Highway 70 West. Each business mentioned above maintains a private drinking water well. The Site consists of approximately 1.13 acres and is currently vacant. In October 2006, a building at the Site burned. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire using a significant volume of water. Before the fire and subsequent demolition and removal activities conducted in November 2008, the Site was occupied by a single-story, slab-on-grade, commercial building of steel and concrete construction occupying approximately 4,400 square feet ft. The building housed a fireworks stand, pawn shop, and an automobile repair shop before it was severely damaged by the fire. A potable water well was located on the south side of the building abandoned during demolition activities in 2008, and a cistern was located off the southwest corner of the building. The ground elevation at the Site is approximately 1,575 ft above mean sea level. Well records from the area indicate that the depth to bedrock is 75 to 100 ft below ground surface bgs.
