Additional Property Attributes

The site has served as the Kittitas County Shop for more than 50 years. As the City grew, the site became surrounded by residential development. County planning efforts have identified the potential for relocation of the shop and redevelopment of the site into possibly affordable residential and limited commercial properties. The site is near Central Washington University and within walking distance to downtown Ellensburg. The County has preliminary designs for the new shop and remediation will likely occur during demolition activities after the new shop is constructed.

Former Use: Constructed in 1949, Kittitas County's Lower County Shop (LCS) provides regular maintenance for and storage of the Public Works road crew fleet. Prior to construction of the LCS, the land was undeveloped. The LCS has served as the base camp for lower county road maintenance projects for more than 50 years. The site includes open bay storage of equipment and vehicles. Routine maintenance of equipment occurs within the central shop area. The central shop historically had hydraulic lifts (no longer present). A wash bay to the west of the central shop area was recently upgraded to include an oil-water separator. The site also contains storage of asphalt, magnesium chloride, gravel, and other related road materials. In May 1990, the County removed three underground storage tanks (USTs) from the site just north of the office building. No leaks or spills were recorded at the time of the UST removals; however, no testing was performed. Subsequently, the main office building was expanded to include a conference room that rests on a concrete foundation and partially overlies the former UST pit. Data collected from this assessment confirms the presence of petroleum analytes in the soils within the UST area.
