Cleanup Activities

Cleanup/Treatment Implemented: Y
Cleanup/Treatement Categories:
Addl Cleanup/Treatment info: In 1987, Winzler and Kelly Consulting Engineers (WK) excavated contaminated soil within the oil storage area, drum storage area, PCP dip tank area, and the planer mill portion of the site. In addition, WK removed surface debris from the green chain area. Depths of excavation within these areas ranged from 0.75 to 4 feet below ground surface (bgs). DHS established a cleanup level of 1 milligram per kilogram (mg/kg) for PCP and 1 mg/kg for TCP. Confirmation samples verified achievement of these cleanup levels except for one sample collected at the planer mill at 48 inches bgs that yielded a TCP concentration of 2 mg/kg (EPA 2005). A Phase II Environmental Site Assessment conducted by Tetra Tech, Inc. and Toeroek Associates, Inc. indicated that contamination remained on-site.

Additional Property Attributes

The Hoopa Valley Reservation is the homeland of the Hoopa Valley Tribe. This rural reservation is located within the forests of Northern California close to the Oregon state line. The reservation is home to multiple residences, educational facilities and tribal administration buildings which serve the tribe's day-to-day operations. The property is a flat, vacant field adjacent to the Hoopa Transfer Station, near the intersection of Highway 96 and Marshall Lane. Previous industrial activity on the property included a logging mill and a veneer company. The logging mill used chemicals to prevent mold and mildew in lumber and presented a potential concern. The Hoopa Valley Tribe would like to reuse the property to expand either the adjacent transfer station or the adjacent Hoopa Forest Industries. Other undetermined commercial/industrial use has been proposed as potential reuse for the property.
